Textile Origami Experiments
Fri 21 – Sun 23 May 2027
The course will begin by teaching basic paper-folding skills, such as simple base folds, reading folding diagrams, folding simple models, and a brief introduction to suitable papers and textiles for this technique. Subsequently, we will delve into surface design techniques that form the basis of paper folding and apply simple models to textile materials. Geometric divisions of a surface into a network of lines, which become three-dimensional forms through the creation of mountain and valley folds, known as „tessellations“, can serve as a basis for hand-pleating. The folds can be fixed by ironing or sewing, and three-dimensionality and shadowing effects will be explored with different materials. Pleating patterns in textiles have a completely different effect than in paper and invite experimentation.
