Colouring with rust and time
Iron, Tannin, and the Poetry of Decay
Thu 11 – Sun 14 Feb 2027
In this course, we shall explore the aesthetic power of corrosion as a natural dyeing technique.
Unique, vibrant marks are created on textiles using iron, plant-based tannins, selected auxiliaries, and time – colour gradients, patina, organic patterns, and defined shapes. When designing our creations, we will learn a variety of effective techniques for producing rust and creating patterns with rust – from working with metal imprints and printing with iron or rust pastes to various binding and clamping techniques, as well as stencil resists. We will encounter iron in the most diverse forms and colour nuances. Alongside theoretical input and guidance, there will be ample space for practical experience and free forms of expression to realise a range of smaller fabric samples or individual larger works.
