Historical Seams for Modern Projects: Purses and Bags
Fri 23rd – Sun 25th October 2026
In this course, we will learn different historical seam constructions that make hand sewing significantly easier and are suitable for both historical and modern hand-sewn projects.
We will produce samples of several seam constructions found in historical textiles from different eras and cultures. We will then use these seams to hand-sew several small pouches and bags.
All these seams have in common that they are very cleverly constructed and really efficient, thus enabling hand-sewing of textiles in a relatively short time. They can also be wonderfully incorporated into modern, hand-sewn projects.
We will learn the following seams: flat felled seam (European & Korean version), butt seam, Mantua Maker seam, English seam, felled seam with lining, running stitch seam, hem seam (multiple variations). Most of these seams will subsequently be used when making small, hand-sewn pouches and bags. Additionally, we will discuss further applications for these seams and important fundamentals for hand sewing. Both historical and modern hand-sewn projects will serve as examples.
