For two decades, Renate Anna Menzel has been collecting and exhibiting artefacts from a vanishing world of nomads and settled peoples. In the summer of 2026, she will be showcasing a selection of her Moroccan Boucharouite (=Scraps) – carpets at Galerie Hain AG, alongside porcelain by Gabriele Hain and paintings by Alois Hain.
As everywhere in the world, the rural areas of Morocco are undergoing significant change. For all time, the textile craft of women has drawn sustenance from the resources of an autarkic life, from the skillful processing of sheep's wool, from the large herds of the tribes. But today, due to migration and the abandonment of traditional life, this beneficial material is lacking. Hand-spun wool has become precious. In its place, the used clothing from our Western consumer society floods the country's markets, offering weavers new raw material. Cut into strips, much like our rag rugs, it is resiliently woven and knotted as home industry. The Moroccan women have thus achieved a wonderful testament to the continued vital will to create of an old folk culture. Carpets of quite unique and new, cheerful vitality have emerged. Whenever there were still remnants, the wool, the processed fleece of the animals, was a precious component. For this represented the tradition of the ancestors, the worldview of grandmothers and mothers. Today, the hype of the markets is also trying to get at this... Boucharouite to more or less appropriate the carpets called (=scraps) from recent decades. Marketing is now even based on AI-designed production, as long as it bears the label „recycled“. How will the creative women of Morocco, in continuation of their folk culture, continue to approach this independently?
