Passementerie Weaving
Mon 20 - Fri 24 July 2026
Passementerie is the craft of creating decorative trimmings—braids, fringes, tassels, and cords—that for centuries have embellished clothing and interiors. Today it is considered an endangered craft, which makes it all the more meaningful to revisit in a contemporary way.In this course, we will explore handwoven passementerie using shaft looms. You will learn to set up the loom and weave a variety of designs, working from historical patterns while also developing your own motifs and variations. We will also explore cord-making techniques and create hand-twisted cords to weave with. A range of materials will be available for experimentation, including textile leftovers sourced from local companies. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have developed a small collection of passementerie samples, as well as a foundation of techniques and ideas that can be translated into future work in fashion, interiors, or textile art.
