E.01
Excursion to Mühlviertel textile companies
Mon 20 July 2026
The Mühlviertel is a traditional textile region. Flax has been grown here and processed into linen fabrics since the early Middle Ages. Although structural change in the 20th century did not stop at this region, some textile companies have survived to this day, some of which serve special niches with innovation, others with sustainability and cover many exciting facets of modern textile production in their diversity.
On this excursion day, we will get to know different companies at four stops and gain an insight into different production methods: We will visit the Vieböck linen weaving mill, the Schernberger ropery, the Haberkorn fire hose producer and a craft business that works with waste materials, among other things. Our focus here is on the waste materials that arise during the production process, such as selvedges, cutting remnants, yarn remnants, etc. These products, which would otherwise usually end up as waste, will be available to us as a valuable resource in the following days of the courses.
The factories are all located within a maximum radius of 45 kilometres from Haslach. We will be travelling by coach and will learn interesting facts about the history of Mühlviertel textile culture and about other factories that cannot be visited on this day. We stop for lunch at a country inn along the way. We will return to Haslach in the late afternoon with many impressions and lots of inspiring material - just in time for the opening of the summer symposium and the exhibitions! The detailed programme will be sent after registration
