The „Dipdii Textiles“ exhibition at the Galerie im Gwölb showcased one-off textile pieces from Bangladesh that combined traditional craftsmanship with sustainability and social responsibility. On display were handmade wall hangings and utility textiles made from recycled sarees and fabrics, which were crafted into artful unique pieces using traditional stitching techniques such as Nakshi Kantha embroidery. Each piece told a story of memory, cultural identity and the lived realities of the women involved.
Dipdii Textiles sees itself as a counter-model to the global fast fashion industry. Instead of standardised mass production, the project focuses on local resources, artisanal skills and decentralised manufacturing in rural communities in Bangladesh. This not only results in high-quality textiles but also creates new economic prospects for local families.
The project was jointly initiated by architect Anna Heringer and master tailor Veronika Lena Lang, together with the Bangladeshi NGO Dipshikha. Creative direction, design and project management are in the hands of fashion designer ELKE BURMEISTER HAUG and her label Ökutür. As part of the exhibition, Elke Burmeister-Haug provided insights into the background of the project and showed how textile production could be designed in a sustainable and human-oriented way.
