S.15
Upcycling Seilerei
Mon 27 - Fri 31 July 2026
This course introduces participants to the craft of transforming textile waste into functional and aesthetic ropes and braids. Throughout the week, we explore the concept of design, material science, recycling principles, and hands-on techniques for turning garments into yarns and these yarns into ropes. Participants learn rope making using twisting methods with the Urban Fibers machines, as well as circular and flat braiding or weaving by hand. Step by step, participants can develop a personal or a group project that applies the newly learned techniques ranging from simple objects made with rope to more complex woven constructions. The course combines sustainability, craft and design, offering a creative space to rethink textile leftovers as valuable resources.

Urban Fibers is a Berlin-based design studio founded by Tau Pibernat and Vera Castelijns that redefines textile production systems through circular and regenerative design. The two designers transform local post-consumer cotton waste garments into yarns compatible with existing weaving, knitting, and braiding industrial technologies by replacing virgin materials entirely. The approach bridges the gap between craft and industry, demonstrating how sustainable, scalable, and socially responsible production can shape the future of the textile industry. The activities range from research, teaching, design prototypes to exhibitions.
