Twining - processing textile waste in a primary technology
Tue 21 - Fri 24 July 2026
This course teaches one of the oldest textile techniques, which was used by our ancestors to make mats, simple dwellings and even items of clothing. Ötzi already had a grass coat that was made using this special weaving technique, twining.
Twisted weave can be used to create very stable surfaces from a wide variety of materials. We use all kinds of used clothing and textile waste. They undergo a transformation in feel and texture. A very special highlight is a twining method borrowed from a Cherokee technique. This involves weaving spirals in a circle to create tubes that can be used to make bags or cushion covers. The First Nation of America also made clothing using this method. We learn various patterns, most of which have an ethnic feel and can be created with almost no technical aids.
