S.12

Tue 21 - Fri 24 July 2026

In this course we will learn the basics of hand quilting using the example of a small quilt (approx. 60 - 90 cm square). A special focus is placed on hand quilting as a sustainable practice through the use of textile remnants, used fabrics, old clothing, textile memorabilia, household textiles, etc.
Many quilting techniques and styles have their origins in the processing of fabric scraps. In this course we will trace some of these techniques from different cultures, such as Log Cabin Blocks, English Paper Piecing, Manx Quilts, Pinecone Quilts, technical aspects of Siddi Quilts or Kawandi, ... and develop our own creations from them.
The aim is to create quilts during the course week that are made entirely from textile remnants and do not require any new materials (with the exception of thread). Textile memorabilia can also be incorporated into the quilts, which is a nice way to give them a second life. The result is either a small series of miniature quilts or a larger quilt project. Both the craftsmanship and the creative and intuitive aspects of quilt making are given sufficient consideration and individual styles are developed.
