S.10

Tue, 21 - Fri, 31 July 2026

Sprang is an ancient textile manufacturing technique, known since the Bronze Age. It works with a warp of threads stretched vertically in a frame. Textile structure is created by crossing the tensioned warp threads together using fingers while a row braided in the upper half of the frame also appears mirror-like in its lower half. The work then grows from both sides.
We will go through the basic steps of the technique, from warping to completing the sprang work. Beginners will learn basic and some advanced sprang techniques creating smaller objects as bags, scarves, net bags, or fingerless gloves. Advanced attendees can work on bigger projects, like a mini dress, waistcoat or bag, using various sprang techniques. In the spirit of this summer symposium we will have the opportunity to use for our sprang projects also some interesting leftover materials in addition to classical yarn.
