Wazome: Paper – Stencil – Pigment
Thurs 04 – Sun 07 February 2027
Wazome (和染め) refers to a traditional Japanese technique where fine kozo paper is printed with detailed stencils and then dyed using a variety of coloured pigments.
We draw inspiration from the colourful, floral, and decorative patterns of Okinawa (Bingata), and the fine, intricate stencils from Ise, and implement them in the course according to our own ideas.
For dyeing, we use pigments of plant, mineral or synthetic origin and employ the traditional Japanese colour scheme: vermilion (shu), carmine (youkou), iron red (Bengara), ochre yellow (oudo), orpiment yellow (sekiou), azurite (gunjou), indigo (ai), soot (sumi), shell lime (gofun). We will produce some of these ourselves in the class, and will use others ready-made.
Dyeing is done with small brushes (Surikomibake). We will explore different dyeing techniques, for example, how to create gradients and special highlights with pigments on paper or fabric, and there will be many opportunities for experimentation.
