A New Kind of Blue

Textile designer Tim van der Loo is exploring alternative approaches to the circular economy and production processes in the fashion industry with „New Blue“. His focus is on a very popular textile, denim, which is produced in large quantities in the jeans industry as cutting scraps or old textiles. His work shows that denim can be part of a continuous material cycle. He has developed a process for shredding old textiles into fibre material. Using special non-woven fabric technology and digitally supported industrial embroidery, the denim scraps are then combined to form a stable fabric. The patterns for the garments are created in parallel, thereby optimising the entire production process and minimising waste.
Tim van der Loo has received multiple awards for his work and will be giving a hands-on workshop on this procedure as part of the summer symposium. In his talk, he will discuss his career path, his research process, and his work at the intersection of craft and industry, mass production and sustainability.
TIM VAN DER LOO is a Dutch post-consumer designer and educator based in Berlin. He studied at Design Academy Eindhoven (BA) as well as at the Weissensee School of Art and Design Berlin and understands waste as a valuable resource.
