Dyeing fabrics with plant-based dyes
Thu 19 – Sun 22 November 2026
In this course, we will be dyeing wool, silk, cotton and linen fabrics with plant-based colours. To achieve solid and vibrant colours, the materials will be mordanted before dyeing. We will be dyeing with classic dye plants such as madder, weld, logwood and cochineal (insect), as well as with plants that we can find in our kitchen and garden. Furthermore, an organic indigo vat will be prepared to achieve blue. By over-dyeing, mixing and post-treating with iron, we will expand our colour palette.
We will be creating a colour-sample palette with fabrics made from wool, silk, cotton, and linen. In between, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with shibori techniques to create patterned fabrics.
